This topic is all about consultations from Professionals and Clients.
*Clients- Do you like a thorough consultation from a Stylist? Do you like when a Stylist shares his of her suggestions or would you rather tell them what you want.
*Stylists- Do you prefer to take your time with a consultation? Sort through magazines? Talk about the latest trends?
I find that this is something that can be improved on and each Stylist has a different approach. I tend to suggest what I feel looks good in my eyes and talk about what's in style right now. I feel that clients are looking to us to share that with them and leave it up to us to help them keep current.

That's an excellent question. Yes every stylist take a different approach to a first visit client consultation.
ReplyDeleteHere's the way I start a style consultation.
First I have the client fill out a "style consultation form". A dozen questions that give me an idea of what they "think" their face shape is, if they color it or ever have, how do they now style their hair and what type of style are they interested in ___(quick and easy, trendy look or not sure. What length are they interested in, long, short or medium length.
And most importantly, what is their main problem they have with their hair if any. And trust me everyone has a problem with their hair. It could be thinning, thickness, fall flat, gets bushy, curl, wave, limpness, lacks body, unmanageable.
With in place and before I pick up the each client a mirrow and show then how to judge the shape of their face. Most people have no idea waht shape they have. I then point of their best facial features and what their profile looks like. Next we look at how their hair grows and combs naturally and were their natural part is located. Again most people have no idea that everyone is born with a natural part (like a thumb print it never changes and sets the stage for a style. We look at the hair's characteristics (wavy curly hair get bushy while straigh hair lays close to the head.
I've found that once someone knows what they have they will have a better understand of what they can do and what would be best.
No matter where I start (long, medium or short) I first explain that it takes "three shaping" in a row to discover and develop the final style. With a few adjustments as it grows-in its easy to customize a style.
PS: Yes like like picture and recommend people find a style they like and bring it along for their first visit. This is especially helpful when they are interested in hair color.
Oh... also I like to shape the hair before I shampoo it as long as its clean. I will make adjustments after its been shampooed. And the shampoo is a big part of their first visit... its a treat (steam towel & condition) with tips for the best way to do this at home.
Ask not what you can do to your hair, ask what your hair can do for you and design a style around it....and it will almost style itself... that my approach
